Grand Restaurant Group, the group behind Bellamy's, Nick & G's, Cork & Knife, and DiCicco's, has officially opened NÓMADA in Carlsbad at 6996 El Camino Real, marking the first concept launched by newly appointed Chef Partner Alex Carballo, with a menu inspired by Chef Carballo's Sinaloan heritage and travels throughout Mexico's coastal and agricultural regions. The venue combines indoor and outdoor spaces, including a patio with fire pits, a U-shaped bar, a stage for live events, and private dining for up to 250 guests. Nómada serves dinner daily, weekend brunch, and weekday happy hour. For a 5:30 seating before an 8 p.m. Leo Carrillo screening, the geography works: the ranch is a fifteen-minute drive south on El Camino Real.
Verise is the quieter option and, for anyone who prefers a room that stays under conversational volume, the better one. Verise serves elevated and culinary-driven Italian food that centers around tradition, seasonality and the pleasure of gathering, with a menu that balances staples like fresh pasta made in-house and seasonal produce that changes with the market, inside the newly opened Hotel Soléa, where guests can dine in the greenery-lined dining room or out on the sunny patio surrounded by olive trees. The hotel opened this year, and the walkable-hotel-bar category has been missing from downtown Carlsbad for a long time.
Manta Raja deserves a note if you land on a Wednesday screening prep night. Manta Raja serves authentic Thai dishes, and if you're planning a midweek visit, stop by on Wednesday and take a look at their vegetable-forward dishes, since their vegan dishes come with a special discount.
The Wednesday layer nobody counted on
Late August in the Village has a second rhythm that most residents have not adjusted to yet. Wednesdays are now the most-programmed weeknight downtown, and they run independent of the film festival.
The State Street Farmers' Market runs on Wednesdays including Aug 5 and Aug 12, and it now stacks against a set of small business milestones worth walking past. - Fish 101 will be expanding with a third location in Carlsbad Village, a popular spot for sustainably caught local fish grilled or fried, casual enough for a fish taco.
- Slice House by Tony Gemignani, founded by the 13-time world pizza champion, is set to open soon with artisan pizza, pastas and more.
For a Carlsbad Village resident, that is the meaningful signal in this summer's news. Two years ago the same brands were opening in Del Mar, La Jolla, and the East Village. The Village's two annual anchors are still on the fall calendar. The Carlsbad Village Street Faire runs its fall installment on November 1, and Taste of Carlsbad Village returns in October with the new restaurant roster featured prominently. If you time October and early November right, you can walk the same block twice and see two different versions of the Village.
